Electric Guitar Amps

Electric guitar amplifiers are in abundance these days. Boutique guitar amp builders are sprouting up everywhere, making sure we all have the best possible tone, but it doesn't come cheap. Larger mass-production companies are still being competitve by expanding their line of guitar amps and offering everything from cheaper low cost amps to debatably faithful reproductions of some of their classic amps. Here's some of the best electric guitar amplification companies.

If you're looking to buy a guitar amplifier, we recommend shopping for the major brands at Zzounds. Ebay is a great place to find used, vintage & rare guitar amps. Crank it up!

Advance Tube Technology:
THE 1492 is an all tube stereo power amp for electric guitar. A couple of 12AX7, a couple of 7025 and four 5881 provide an output power of more than 65 W for each channel. The preamp/driver section features a particular circuitry, developed by ADVANCE TUBE TECHNOLOGY, which allows the tubes to relase a powerful sound with an excellent tone. TA '70 and TA '100 limited series are full tube stereo amplifiers powered by 3 x 12AX7 and 4 x 6L6 (TA '70: 60 watts per side), and 3 x 12AX7 and 4 x 6550 (TA '100: 100 watts per side).Allessandro:
Time-tested circuits and audiophile-grade components: George Alessandro has applied these proven concepts of "high-end" to the guitar market. However, in the world of guitar amplification, what we look for is not necessarily higher fidelity, but rather, the concept of higher performance. "I believe in making a high quality, high performance product rather than a price-based, mass-production thing," is how Alessandro puts it.

Allen Amplification:
Allen Amplification offers boutique vintage-style all-tube handwired guitar combo amplifiers or heads and matching speaker cabinets. Based on the classic blackface American circuits from the golden age, these amps provide that proven tone and reliability in a brand new amp, with a few new modern features for today's demanding players.

Art Guitars:
Combining a love of art and a passion for guitars, Phil Sylvester creates objects that are stunning - both visually and audibly. When you first see these creations, you might find yourself asking "I wonder how they play and sound?". In today's world of mass-produced imitations, these one-of-a-kind guitars and amplifiers represent something unique: a fusion of originality, artistic expression and musical excellence.

Aslin Dane:
Aslin Dane amps have boutique styling with a discretionary objective. The AG-60RC Amplifier features 60 Watts, Dual Channel Switching, Spring Reverb, Chorus, effects loop w 1/4" jacks, 1/4" Aux in(-10db). A close cousin to the AG-60; the AG-25 features the same attractive cabinet styling while featuring both a 10" Celestian speaker and reverb. This amp is extremely effective for studio and practice. More models, including acoustic amplification, are available at our site.

Audio Cage:
The 18/00 Series amps are available in 18- and 30-watt models, both of which combine a simple but flexible two-channel linkable preamp with an EL-84 output section. The circuit has a short, direct signal path, with no reverb, tremolo, or effects loops to add noise or compromise the tone signature. This design produces a remarkably smooth harmonic richness and chime that has become my sonic benchmark. The Scan-O-Plex 30 is simply my lower-powered interpretation of the classic 50-watt early "plexi" head, voiced to emulate the best characteristics of three of my favorite models from 1968.

Auralux:
Introducing the Auralux StageKing Combo. The StageKing is a straight forward, no frills amplifier designed with the bluesman (or woman!) in mind. A 50 watt, all tube machine, its sounds range from clean jazz, to rock rhythm, to smokin' blues tones with natural tube compression overdrive sounds. On-board reverb with dwell AND depth controls give greater control over your reverb sound.

Bad Cat Amps:
The BAD CAT AMPLIFIERS COMPANY, of Corona, California, offers an entirely new line of unquestionably superior Class A Tube guitar amplifiers. Whether judged for richest sound or build quality, consider that no other amp line even comes close. Bad Cat offers four amps models: Black Cat, Wild Cat, Cub II, Hot Cat, and custom speaker cabs.

Blockhead Amps:
Welcome to the Blockhead Amplification website. Blockhead amplifiers are faithful recreations of the most sought after Marshall(TM) "Plexi" amps of the 1960's. Handcrafted from the finest modern and vintage components, Blockhead amps are exact replicas built to identical specification as the originals.

Blue Tone Amps:
We have the technology to produce simple amplifiers with a simulated vintage valve tone. We call this Virtual Valve Technology. These could operate at any volume without loss of tonal character and would be made small enough and light in weight so as to be easily portable. They would not need to use valves because they would generate sounds in a new way - by analogue simulation of the complex interactions between power valves, output transformers and speakers.

Bogner Amplificatio:
Reinhold Bogner had been designing and building amplifiers long before leaving Germany in 1989. Moving to Los Angeles he quickly gained the trust of many influential players including: Steve Stevens, Dan Huff, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Landau and Steve Vai who sought out his skill at modifing and custom building their amps. Eddie Van Halen entrusted Reinhold to overhaul and revitalize Eddies #1 Marshall Plexi, Eddie was pleased. BOGNER AMPLIFICATION was born.

Boyden Amplifiers:
All my amplifiers are constructed with ceramic tube sockets and are hand wired point to point on terminal strips for "Mil-Spec" reliability. The chassis is constructed of 16 gauge steel with full seam welds. Cabinet construction is either birch ply, guantumbo ply, or pine with "finger joint" edges for increased strength. All amplifiers are personally designed by Dick Boyden with the performing guitarist in mind. No circuit boards - No negative feedback. Boyden amplifiers are played by such artists as Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, and John Mooney.

Brandt Ampflifiers:
The BAD-GP50 is a 50 Watt Class A¹, Guitar Amplifier. A must for the serious musician's arsenal of amps. Features (4) 6550/KT88 triode connected output tubes, 3 gain stages, Active Tube Equalizer for Treble, Middle, Bass, Tremelo & Reverb, foot-switchable, 2 X 12" speakers, Hardwood (Bolivian Rosewood with birdseye Maple inlay) cabinet w/ hand-rubbed oil finish.

Budda Amplification:
Budda offers two models of guitar amplifiers: the Verbmaster and the Twinmaster. Both achieve tone of the gods. All Budda amps offer crisp, clean, and powerful tone.

Cage Amplifiers:
I build all CAGE amplifiers to standards that can only be reached in a limited-production, hand-assembled product. The 18/00 Series amps are available in 18 and 30 watt models, both of which combine a simple but flexible two-channel linkable preamp with an EL-84 output section. The Scan-O-Plex 30 amplfier captures all the glassy crunch of a 50-watt "plexi" while making just 30-watts of realistically-giggable power!

Callaham Amps:
All amps are a hand-wired point-to-point design on phenolic boards. Carbon film resistors, Sprague electrolytic and orange drop caps, CTS and Clarostat pots and solid core teflon insulated wire are used throughout. Output transformers are a paper wound 7-interleaved design. The chassis is a .070" aluminum folded and welded design that is extremely strong and made to handle road travel. 1/6" lexan (plexi) is used for the control panels, with a gold faced for the front panel and a cream faced for the back panel. The cabinet is made from 3/4" Honderan Mahogany or Cherry and either flamed Birch or Maple trim. Cabinet woods may vary depending on availability of the Mahogany or Cherry. Both are quite beautiful.

Carlson Amps:
If harmonically complex tones are what you seek, Carlson Amplification might be just the amp company for you! In 1999 we introduced the Turbo Pup, which offers a rich, complex tone in a 2x10" package for the discerning musician. From the start, we wanted to design an amp that had ample headroom for the gigging musician, yet didn't sound thin & "empty" prior to the onset of distortion. Combining the richness of a Marshall with the brilliance of a blackface Fender was the goal, and the Turbo Pup was the result.

Carr Amps:
Each Carr Amplifier is entirely point-to-point hand-wired, uses costly materials such as custom transformers and speakers, polypropylene filter capacitors, hospital-grade power cords, and pine cabinets with dovetailed joints. Each model provides a variety of features, and sensible design makes operation effortless.

Clark Amplification:
Clark Amplification builds accurate Fender® tweed era replica amplifiers without compromise. Finger jointed pine cabinets covered with aged sealed tweed, triple chrome plated steel chassis, paper bobbin transformers, eyelet boards point to point wired with cloth covered solid wire, custom manufactured, Sprague, and Jensen capacitors, Allen Bradley carbon composition resistors, CTS and CGE potentiometers, WeberVST and Celestion speakers, Carling switches, military grade tube sockets, and NOS tubes. These amplifiers are all about quality and exactness to Leo Fender's tradition. Nothing but the best.

Cornford Amps:
There are two ways to build a guitar amp - if you boil everything down to its barest form. The first is the mass-produced PCB way, where you have lots of components assembled onto large boards by machine, which are then clipped into the amp chassis by the workforce. This way, labour content and costs can be kept to a bare minimum. The second is the handbuilt, hand-wired way, which is how we do things. This basically involves no machines whatsoever and a horrific labour content as, by it's nature, everything is done by hand.

Crate Amplification:
As avid guitar players themselves, Crate engineers build the gear they want to use. And as crafters of tone, they're naturally good listeners--not only to the purity of the sound, but also to the insight of their fellow musicians, whose immeasureable experience is a driving force behind every piece of Crate gear.

Custom Audio Electronics:
Designed after years of painstaking research and development with some of the finest guitarists in the industry, CAE Amplifiers are capable of a wide variety of vintage to modern tones. The straightforward design and rugged construction makes these amps simple to use, yet extremely versatile. From warm, fat & punchy clean sound to blistering overdrive and everything in between, these amps must be played & heard to be believed.

Demeter Amplification:
These amps deliver the warmth and clarity of a vintage Fender amp as well as the crunch of a Marshall plexie and the searing lead sound of the legendary Demeter TGA-3. Each amp is carefully hand wired using only the highest quality parts and tested at our factory in Van Nuys, CA. You can see as well as hear the quality and attention to detail on both the inside and out.

Dr. Z Amps:
We use the best components available to build professional quality amps at prices that are very competitive for hand-built, point-to-point wired, U.S. built amplifiers. Every amp we ship can hold it's own in "amp shootouts" anywhere, and that's been proven again and again for the past decade. In summary, Dr. Z Amplifiers and speaker cabinets are made with the finest of materials and with great attention to detail and sound.

Edward Amplification:
To give you a better idea of what The ED amp is all about, put yourself in this setting: You play in a band that does small to medium gigs, you want a low wattage stage amp that cranks so you can get that tube power amp distortion but you also want to be able to switch to clean. You want the ability to give yourself a little boost with a foot switch when needed for solo's. Reverb and tremolo would be cool. You'd appreciate an EQ that actually cuts and boosts and a convenience outlet for the stomp-box adapter would be handy. The ED is a combo guitar amp that does all of the above and more.

Electrosonic Amplifiers:
Electrosonic Amplifiers Builds all of our amplifiers to order. Cabinets, woods, chassis, electronic components, speakers, controls, and circuitry among everything else, are all built to a player's specifications. If a player is not knowledgeable on the effect all of these components have on the amplifier's sound, we will work with the player to achieve their desired sound.

Emery Sound:
My intention is to build amps that have the touch response and sound quality of the great old school amps, with an aggressively clear character that stays true to the sound of the guitar and player, but without the stage volume. AThe all tube circuits are as simple as functionally possible, with an emphasis on purity of tone. The minimal number of tone robbing switches and controls maximizes the connection between brain and speaker. Our instruments give you back your fingers as the primary shapers of your sound!

Fargen Amps:
Fargen Amplification is proud to offer some of the best sounding and highest quality hand crafted tube guitar amplifiers on the market today! Top grade components and construction can be seen throughout our amplifiers. Each amp is hand crafted one at a time right here in the U.S.A.

Full Tilt Audio:
I want our customers to get the amp they've always wanted. Things like exotic wood cabinets of Lacewood and Quilt Maple. Translucent stains and a lacquer finish buffed to a high polish. How 'bout a brass plated chassis to go with that? No boring chrome or cheap nameplates here. Beefy transformers, built to stand the test of time. Our Boneshaker line features ALL film capacitors. No electrolytics that need peridoic replacement. Road Cases! That's right, cases. All our amps come with a case. Would you buy a guitar without a case? Of course not!

Fulton Webb Amplification:
Fulton-Webb amplifiers began when there was a great demand for low wattage Marshall style amplifiers. All Fulton-Webb amps are equipped with 4, 8 and 16-ohm jacks. It has been our experience that speaker selector switches do not provide enough surface contact area to pass speaker voltages and tones between the amp and cabinets resulting in an inferior sound.

Garnet Amps:
By the early '70's, Garnet was firmly established in most Canadian markets and had made strong inroads into America. All of the Garnet tube amps were designed by Gar Sr. Some of the more popular models were the PRO, REBEL, and BTO (big time operator) series. These three series all had two guitar heads and a suitably powered P.A. system. To follow the success of these lines, the popular PRO 200, PRO 400, and PRO 600 all tube heads were introduced followed by three DEPUTY models, produced as combo amps and heads. One piece combo amps would include the BANSHEE, GNOME, L'il ROCK, MACH 5, REVOLUTIONS I, II, and III, ENFORCER, and SESSIONMAN. The Herzog, H-zog, and two stand alone reverb units were all tube effects devices designed by Gar in the late '60's and early '70's.

Genz Benz:
Introducing EL DIABLO 100, an EL 34 powered 100/50 watt tube head from Genz Benz. Finally, an amplifier with the tone, expression and features worthy enough to match our "world class" guitar enclosures. From the flick of the POWER ON toggle switch, the liquid blue glow is an expression of this tone machine's warmth and uniqueness. The design of the tube power section is capable of utilizing EL 34's, 6L6's or 5881 power tubes to suit each player's artistic pallet.

George Dennis:
We have put a lot of effort into developing our line of all - tube amplifiers. The result is an amplifier which delivers an impeccable sound, and combines extreme versatility with ease of use. The Blue is a great tool in the hands of any player, in search of that particular personal edge. On our assembly line, only the best components are used in building The Blue. Each and every components has been meticulously tested, to ensure a long and trouble free life. To partner our amazing amplifier, we use Celestion loudspeakers in all our enclosures.

Gerhart Amps:
Gerhart Amplification is dedicated to the pursuit of exceptional tone and quality in handmade, vacuum tube Guitar and Bass Amplfiers. Using the finest components and a union of vintage and modern technologies, we offer today's musicians the quality of tone that is so lacking in many of today's amps, along with the reliability and affordability that modern manufacturing technologies provide.

Gerlitz Amplification:
The inspiration behind our G1 Revelator Dual Amp was a twofold challenge... first to combine two of the most beloved guitar amplifiers - a Fender 'blackface' and a Marshall 'plexi' - into one portable package, and then to achieve consistent full output tube tone at any volume level.

Germino Amps:
Germino amplifiers are totally hand made production electrical instruments crafted here in the USA. Each amp features some of the finest components and materials available. High quality carbon comp resistors to ensure a warm vintage tone. Each amp is hand assembled and wired from the drilling and installation of turrets on the circuit board to the final testing and tweaking by ear. Attractive "Plexi" style faceplates. Custom wound transformers by Heyboer, Mallory 150 series caps, 2 Watt military pots and CTS pots, Belton octal sockets. Carling switches, fully insulated Cliff jacks. JJ filter caps wired with stranded copper wire in an aluminum chassis.

Gibson Goldtone Amps:
In creating Goldtone and Super Goldtone amps, Gibson went back to the source of tone, to the amps of the '50s, and started with true '50s-style, Class A all-tube technology, with the celebrated 12AX7 preamp tubes and EL84s in the power amp. Then Gibson "re-evolved" the guitar amplifier, avoiding all the developments in amp design over the last half-century that have compromised tone. As a result Goldtones and Super Goldtones are stronger than the originals, with a more powerful sound but with no alteration to that pure, fundamental quality - the guitar amplifier's reason for being - tone.

Groove Tubes:
Now as the established guru for tube tone, it was natural for Aspen to expand his product line to include tube gear. His first breakthrough invention, the Speaker Emulator, allows the output of a tube guitar amp to directly interface with a recording console or a PA mixer. Based on this patent, Aspen formed GT Electronics, which eventually developed into a wide range of tube guitar preamps, tube amps and guitar speaker systems. GT's unique custom shop guitar amplifiers feature the Trio preamp, Dual 75 switchable power amp, and the famous Soul-o Series amps.

Guytron Amplifiers:
Guytron is a company born out of a commitment to quality and innovation. Built with the experience of more than 20 years in the music-electronics trade, Guytron uses traditional and time proven methods, dating back 30-plus years to the "Golden Era" of American HI-FI. Wherever possible, new techniques and technologies are employed, but never at the expense of quality or reliability. We are always looking to build things in the safest most efficient manner that yields the best possible results. At Guytron, we are concerned about the well being of our clients, our employees, and our planet.

Hall, (Dave) Guitar Amplifiers:
Dave Hall guitar amplifiers are designed and manufactured in the UK using traditional point to point methods. Each amplifier is custom tuned to produce only the very highest standard of tone to meet the demands of the guitarist for whom a compromise in sound is not an option. All Dave Hall amps use a GZ34 valve rectifier (that's what the VR means!) which really comes into effect when the amplifier is used at medium and high power. When used like this the amplifier will compress and sustain notes and chords without losing tone in a way that no solid state rectifier circuit can.

Mack Music Systems
Don Mackrill, founder of Mack Music Systems, makes budget boutique guitar amplifiers - hand made amps that really provide true boutique tone (under 20 watts) and reliability at an affordable price (under $1000).

StubbyFex:
Inspired by Star Trek, the Spock amp features single ended, ultra linear outputs, 8 Watts per channel. The "next generation" of this amp will use Hammond Transformers instead of the NOS ones shown in the picture, as these are no longer being manufactured. Using all hand crafted, point to point wiring, select hardwoods, and the best components on the planet. Options include Svetlana 6L6GC tubes, 12AX7A instead of 6SL7 tubes, and choice of input and output jacks. $1200.

What if they were a high performance part? Not just a replacement part, but an upgrade. What if an ampboard could make your amp run faster and jump higher?...

Tone King Amplifier Company:
The Meteor amplifier design is available in four different models: The 6V6-driven Meteor 20A and 40A, and the EL-84-driven Meteor 15A and 30A. The two 6V6-based models continue the Tone King tradition of "blackface"-inspired clean tones with exceptional depth, lushness, dynamics, and musicality, a fat "tweed" tone with incredible warmth and smooth overdrive, and a lively, harmonically-rich distortion tone.

In terms of overdrive and distortion the Tubetec aim is to be able to retain the original sound that comes from the string, this is achieved at relatively high distortion and sustain levels. The EQ's in the pre-amplifiers are of the passive type in order to keep the original sound. Extra features are a send/return loop and also relay systems that can be activated by foot switches so as to select different channels.

Victoria Amp Co.:
I've been playing guitar for over 25 years and one important fact I've learned from countless one-nighters is that an amp can make or break your sound. A good amp is an extension of your guitar... and a great amp is an extension of your soul. I discovered this little fact in a smoky dive in Iowa using a borrowed Tweed Super®. It was like discovering the missing link. I've been an avid collector and user of Fender Tweeds ever since. It was inevitable that the demand for these great old amps caught up with the supply and drove prices sky high. Available productions are out of reach for most working-stiff musicians, and official "reissues" in my opinion merely come close. The market is just right for an accurate reproduction at a reasonable price. The market is just right for Victoria Amp Co.

Vintone:
I strive to accurately re-create the classic tonal circuits of yesterday that have withstood the test of time. I do this the old fashioned way......One at a time and entirely by hand! I have over 25 years of hands on experience in electronics as well as fine woodworking. I also design and build one-of-a-kind amplifiers that take the best features from the finest classic circuits and add new technologies. This adds new tonal qualities that were not possible in the days of their creation. All circuits are vacuum tube driven and I use no printed circuit boards. All tag board is military spec. solid 1/8" garolite epoxy.

Voodoo Amps:
We specialize in modifications, restortations and custom built tube amps. We are just as obsessed with tone as you are and whether you are looking for a high gain amp or a beautiful clean amp, we can get you the tone you are looking for. The Voodoo Hex line is a modern gain amp without the "fuzzy-buzzy-compressed" distortion that has become all too common in today's modern-gain amps. If you want stunning dymanics, sustain and the sound of a "cranked" amp at any volume level then the Voodoo Hex is for you! The Voodoo Hex easily competes with any of the high gain amps costing $3,800.00 or more. Words simply cannot describe the tone of these amps! The Voodoo Hex series is point-to-point wired, uses high quality components and is proudly made in the USA.

Vox Amps:
The late 1950's saw the launch of the VOX AC15 shortly followed by the AC30, remarkable then and legendary today. Right from the start, VOX valve amplifiers were adopted by some of the world's most outstanding musical talents including The Stones, The Beatles and The Shadows and countless others. The AC30 is one of the most recorded guitar amplifiers in rock history, not surprising given its universally acclaimed warmth and three-dimensional tonal character. What is slightly surprising is that it seems to have lost none of popularity over the years, quite the reverse in fact. AC15's and AC30's can be seen on stages and in recording studios the world over and are being used to make great, modern rock music.

Vox, (The) Showroom:
The VOX Showroom is the most complete source of VOX amplifier, guitar and organ information on the Internet. VOX* is one of the most complex and misunderstood manufacturers in musical instrument history - and the story still continues today. VOX, at one time was one of the largest musical instrument companies in the world and their products were utilized by almost every major music group during the nineteen sixties and on to the present. From The Shadows to Lawrence Welk, The Beatles to U2, VOX is the "voice" of generations of musicians worldwide.

Watkins Electric Music (WEM):
The Dominator Amplifier is based on the legendary 17 watt 60's model. The first channel of this new model is in its true state with the clean and responsive sound from high grade EL84's with Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble Boost and Tremolo. The output of the new model is increased from 17 watts to 30 (RMS) by way of four EL84 valves in push pull. The second channel carries full overdrive features and is selected by push switch. Output transformer of Hi Fi quality and about twice the size of the original - giving brilliant "drive" and "singing" features. Foot switches for Slave Out. Record Out. Send FX. Return FX. Tremolo. Channel Select.

Welborne Labs:
The circuit topology of the DRD amp is very unique as far as single-ended amplifiers go. It consists of an Ultrapath output stage whereby the return path of the output transformer connects to the output tube's cathode instead of the power supply. This topology results in greater detail and it is believed this is a result of better coupling between all parts of the circuit and less interaction with the power supply components. We now offer the DRD amplifiers as both kits and factory assembled.

West Amps:
My name is Dave West, (David W. West) of Okemos, MI. About 1965, a fellow named Dick Wagner walked into my little Hi-fi shop on Saginaw Street in Flint, Michigan. I was a local kid, 21 years old, and I sold McIntosh, Dynaco, Acoustic Research, Klipsch, and a few others. Then one day someone brought in a Sunn Amplifier. Much to my surprise it contained a completely stock Dynaco Mark III power amp and a very little modified Dynaco PAM-I monaural preamp. They were putting these items in a cabinet, putting JBL speakers in a cabinet, and getting LARGE BUCKS for these things. I thought, "If they can do it, why can't I?" Thus was born the original spark that led to West LaboratoriesTM and the West guitar amps.

Wizard Amps:
Concealed within the attractive yet mysterious appearance lies the heart of these beasts. Massive power supplies provide extraordinary dynamics and solid punch, complimenting sweet but powerful output stages. The rigidity of military type turret board construction and point to point soldering, are combined with the highest quality components available. Solidified in a welded .76" solid steel chassis, enclosed in a 14 ply Baltic Birch cabinet, and commanded through Lexan control panels, Wizard Amplifiers unite sound, reliability and appearance.
