Barber Electronics guitar effects are primarily unique designs, offering clarity, definition and wide range of textures & tones only found in boutique guitar pedals. Luckily for the consumer, Barber effects are reasonably priced and help bridge the gap between mass-produced and boutique guitar effects. The Tone Press is one of the more unique boutique compressors on the market, offering it’s parallel compression design, which keeps the direct signal intact.
Popular Barber Electronics Pedals
Barber Tone Press (Compress0r)
The Barber Tone Press is Barber’s most popular pedal, and for good reason. They studied the issues commonly attributed to popular guitar compressor pedals and discovered that they all reverse the guitar’s phase, creating an audible pop that detracts from the note’s attack. What Barber decided upon was parallel compression. The “Blend” control on the Tone Press blends your direct and compressed signal together in parallel using a discrete Class A FET mixing circuit. As a result, your guitar tone is a perfect blend of compression and direct, unaltered signal. It sounds natural, and sustains for days!
Barber Direct Drive (Overdrive)
The Barber Direct Drive is another staple of Barber Electronics, offering classic British amp-like overdrive tones with less compression artifacts than other more commonly available overdrives. With incredible clarity in tone, ample guitar volume cleanup, and a wide harmonic range, it’s no wonder this has been on of Barber’s best selling pedals. Some unique features include an internal bass control (allows for amplifier matching), internal presence control (adds brilliance), and voltage operation anywhere from 9-18 volts.
Barber Direct Drive LG (Low Gain)
Originally the brainchild of a custom project Barber performed for a customer, the Direct Drive LG smoother, sweeter, more vintage version of Barber’s top selling overdrive pedal. The Barber Direct Drive Low Gain mimics the tube rectification and sweeter dynamics of the early era British amps.
Barber LTD (Overdrive)
A discontinued cult classic from Barber Electronics, the LTD is one hell of an overdrive. The tone control at high noon on the SR version offers a nearly flat frequency response (even flatter than the Silver LTD version), which is perfect for players needing more powerful EQ options. Bass and presence can be further controlled via internal trimpots (helpful for amp matching). This overdrive pedal is excellent for chordal work due to it’s open sound.
Barber Small Fry
Probably one of Barber’s most dynamic overdrive pedals, the Small Fry offers everything from crisp attack to variable dynamics to astounding note definition. The Small Fry’s precision-matched parts (with Barber’s own specifications) contribute to ensure symmetrical/asymmetric clipping + less intermodulation within the pedal’s distortion character. Complex chords ring with ease and clarity, and the pedal can serve as an overall tone enhancer in addition to serving as a medium gain overdrive.
Barber Trifecta (Fuzz)
Fuzz versatility is the name of the game with the Barber Electronics Trifecta. Using a three way toggle switch to select between three classic vintage fuzz circuits (EHX Big Muff, Colorsound Tone Bender & Colorsound Supa Bender), the Trifecta can go from spongy fuzz tones to heavy bombed out fuzz madness. No matter whether you use humbuckers or single coin pickups, the Sludge control allows you to dial in the bass to suit your specific guitar and amp setup. The tone control, which is also super cool, takes your tone from Big Muff style scoop to hi-fi flat response.
Barber Dirty Bomb (Fuzz)
Barber went beyond their normal range to produce the Dirty Bomb, a versatile high-gain distortion stompbox that can take your tone from low chunk to scooped-mids. Three different tonal modes are accessible via a toggle switch, a vintage-style 2-band EQ helps with fine tuning, and doesn’t it seem like every darn Barber pedal as an internal bass control by this point? In geek yterms, the Cascading FET circuit, paired with MOSFET distortion, offers very amp-like tube distortion.
Barber Half Gainer (Overdrive)
Probably one of Barber Electronics’ coolest pedals, the Half Gainer is a dual channel version of the discontinued LTD low gain overdrive pedals. Additional features such as a “mid character” control shifts the EQ curve centered around the mid-range, helping to compliment the new curve. The pedal go from flat to mid-range richness, making it a versatile pedal…like most of Barber’s line of dirt effects. The great thing about this pedal, however, is that two independent gain and output controls allow for tremendous live applications. Oh, and it’s pretty darn small for a dual channel overdrive…which is great for saving real estate on your pedalboard.
